Remembering Marltons Grossman's Lumber - Sept 1976 - April 1989

On this day in Evesham history.... 30 years ago today.

On April 5, 1989, Grossman's announced it would be closing their Marlton store, and only their Marlton store.

Grossman's had emerged from bankruptcy in November 1986.  At the time, the chain had 245 stores in 17 states, including local stores in Marlton, Stratford, Woodbury, Glassboro, and Pennsauken. One of the first priorities was to upgrade all its stores, which had suffered under its prior parent company.  In 1988, Grossman's created a prototype for its new stores and planned to roll out upgrades to all the existing stores.

Unforunately it was decided that the upgrades needed for the Marlton store were not worth the expense. All employees were offered positions at other Grossman's at the other NJ stores, which would remain open.

The Marlton store had opened 13 years earlier, on September 29, 1976.

It replaced an A&P grocery store that had closed the year before.

The store was closed by the end of April.  It became a Staples later that year.

The history of Grossman's is long and convoluted involving mergers, takeovers and corporate raiders.  Should you want to read about it in length, I will recommend this article.
