Evesham and the Dukes of Hazzard Rules

On the Dukes of Hazzard, it seems like every episode ended with the Duke boys needing to get back to Hazzard County before Sheriff Roscoe P Coltrane caught up with them.  Leaving the county would violate their parole, and as long as they made it home, they couldn't be charged.

It got me to wondering on how many different roads could you enter Evesham.  I decided only to look at  'public roads' to exclude things like the car wash that straddles the line, as well as the TD Bank entrance at Kresson and 73. And I am trying to avoid anything that might have been a road at one point but no longer is, even though you can get a car down it. Or maintenance 'roads' in the Black Run.

The borders between Evesham and neighboring towns are not always well-marked, so it makes the question challenging. Some borders were probably obvious at one time, such as the South Branch Pennsauken Creek (border with Cherry Hill) or the Mullica River (border with Atco). There has been so much development around those creeks that many people may not even realize a creek is still there, as they have been diverted under roads.

In other places, the border was a straight line drawn by surveyors, not based on any geographic or topographic elements. When developers built neighborhoods or towns and counties built roads decades and centuries later, they were undeterred by artificial borders.

By my count, there are 41 ways to drive into Marlton on public roads. While most of them are uneventful and obvious, some are quite unusual. I've included pictures of the more unusual ones. It may be possible that I missed one, or that I included one that shouldn't be here, but I am reasonably confident this is correct.

And here are some pictures of some of the odder borders...

On Clements Court, the 4 houses on the bottom of this photo are in Evesham, but the rest are Mount Laurel. The Evesham houses have a Mount Laurel zipcode, as their mail is delivered by the Mount Laurel Post Office.

And since school buses do not usually enter courts, presumably this means children in those 4 houses stand on the corner of Church and Clements, in Mount Laurel, for transport to schools in Evesham.

Clements Court is bifurcated by the Mount Laurel/Evesham town line

Ravenscliff - North of the blue line is Mount Laurel, the rest is Evesham

Driving down Church Road towards Lenape High School, if you make a right on Wellesley Way, you pass from Mount Laurel into Marlton. As you get to the bottom of the horseshoe, you enter Medford. So this is actually 2 border crossings into Marlton.

This picture from Google Maps is quite old. Most of the houses on the Marlton plots have been built by now.

And in a quirk of geography, almost directly across Church Road is Lenape High School in Medford. But none of the kids on Wellesway Way, even though within walking distance, go to Lenape. The Marlton houses get bussed to Cherokee, the Medford ones to Shawnee.

Wellesley Way

As I recently documented in a blog post, the border (indicated by the blue line) between Cherry Hill and Marlton follows the South Branch Pennsauken Creek. In this picture, you can see where it passes under 3 different roads - Conestoga Drive, Route 70 and Old Marlton Pike.

The neighborhood between Brick Road and Evesham Road is divided in multiple places by the county line. At Brick/Marlowe, Gainsboro, Sandringham and Evesham Road.

The white line running horizontally is the town line.

There are 4 ways to enter Marlton on this map. Church Road or Church Street at the top left. (Union Mill does not count, as you would need to turn on to either Church Street or Church Road to enter Marlton)

At the top right, Greentree turns into Hainesport-Mt Laurel at the town line, and Church Road crosses into Mount Laurel just past Cheyenne's.

Evesboro Triangle is a weird collection of borders

The border between Evesham and Berlin stops following the Mullica River and takes a straight line north west. The circle part of Robin Lane is in Berlin.
