Election Day is 11/5/2019 - Local Election Guide

UPDATE 10/15/2020 - Note that the Election Guide below is for 2019.  The 2020 verision is located here: https://aviewfromevesham.blogspot.com/2020/09/evesham-voting-primer-and-faqs.html

State, county, and local elections will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019.  Polls will be open from 6am to 8pm.  While this is an 'off year' election  (no votes for President, Congress, or Governor on the ballot), there are still important decisions to be made that will greatly affect us locally.  The winners of this election will have an impact on how your property taxes are spent: 65% of your property taxes go to the local and regional school district, and another 14% goes to the county.  The Evesham Board of Fire Commissioners sets policy which affects how quickly they can respond to a fire at your house.  The State Assembly controls how much money is sent to our local school district.  Please do what you can to get out and vote!

You should have received something that looks like this in the mail.  It is your 'Sample Ballot'.  The important information from this page is in the lower left, the location of where you need to go to vote.  If you did not get one of these, you can check with the state to determine if you are registered, and where you need to go to vote.

The first office on the ballot is for Member of the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey.  The General Assembly is lower house of New Jersey State Government, so it is similar to the US House of Representatives.  Gina LaPlaca and Mark Natale are Democrats running in Column 1, Jean Stanfield and Ryan Peters are Republicans running in Column 2.  Tom Giangiulio Jr is also running under the MAGA Conservative Party.  You will be casting 2 votes - you can choose two of the same party or one of each if you like.  Here are links to their campaign home pages.  (I could not find one for Tom Giangiulio, only his personal Facebook page.)

The next office is for Burlington County Sheriff, where Democrat Anthony Basantis is running against Republican Michael Ditzel, along with third party candidates Erik Johnston and Robert Shapiro.  The Burlington County Sheriff's Department is the principal law enforcement in Burlington County, and is headed by the Sheriff.  (I could not find a campaign homepage for Robert Shapiro).

The Burlington County Board of Freeholders is a board of 5 members that governs Burlington County.  Democrat Linda Hynes faces off against Republican Latham Tiver for a full term as Freeholder, and Democrat Daniel O'Connell faces Republican Lee Schneider for an unexpired two year term.

The next two are school district races.  On the top, Bonnie Olt is running unopposed for the Lenape Regional School District Member of the Board of Education.  Cherokee High School in Marlton is part of the Lenape Regional District.

The bottom box is for the Evesham Township School District Board of Education.  The Evesham Township Board of Education is a board of 9 members, and there are three open seats available with five candidates running.  The instructions say 'Vote for Three' candidates.  The school board race is non-partisan, meaning candidates do not run under a party banner.  The five candidates are: Trish Everhart, Dennis Mehigan, Jeff Lanzilotta, Lewis Kipness and Aneesh Kanthan.

The Marlton Sun sent questionnaires to each candidate, the results of which can be found here:

The Evesham Township Board of Fire Commissioners are responsible for establishing operational policies, hiring and appointing members, and the funding for the operations of the Fire District within the guidelines and statutes of the State of New Jersey. The board, as public officials, must follow all of the rules that are promulgated for public agencies.  You will vote for two candidates.

There are 7 candidates running for 2 open seats.  The Evesham Township Professional Firefighters Association held a Board of Fire Commissioners Candidate Forum where the public could ask questions of the candidates.  All candidates were invited and four participated.  You can view the video here:  https://www.facebook.com/iaff4687/videos/776910229437642/?permPage=1

And finally there is a Public Question to vote Yes or No on.  There is an interpretive statement included to explain what you are voting on.
