From the 1930s to the 1950s, Marlton had (at least) three turkey farms.
The 37 acre Elmar Turkey farm on Elmwood Road was owned by the oddly named Walter Bacon. Mr Bacon, a one-time president of the New Jersey Turkey Growers Association, specialized in the 'Jersey Buff', a broad-breasted turkey that was developed after 11 years of research at Rutgers University. The breed was a small economical, quick-maturing bird designed to fit the needs of the small family. Mr Bacon shipped about 20,000 birds a year. This farm was located where the Knightsbridge Estates neighborhood is now.
The Springwood Turkey Farm was owned by the Samuel Clayton Lippincott and was situated on Route 40 (which later became Route 70). Lippincott was one of the largest 'turkey fanciers' in the state, specializing in Bronze, White Hollands and Bourbon Reds.
The Marlenor Turkey Farm and Hatchery was located on the Marlton Circle where Cherry Valley Tractor is today and was owned by Myron Miller. He also specialized in White Hollands and Bourbon Reds.
In 1950, NJ produced 400,000 turkeys, bringing in a little more than $3,000,000. The average turkey sold for 60 to 65 cents per pound.
While this picture isn't very good, the caption notes that 3 weeks before Thanksgiving 1935, this flock 'is in training' on the Springwood Turkey Farm. I don't know what that means! |

I will be spending the day with family in far off Medford. Its 14 minutes door to door. When my wife and I were pondering moving back to New Jersey from Connecticut back in 2003, we made a list of pros and cons, and not having to drive on Thanksgiving (and other holidays) actually made the list, because the drive was that dreadful, so every year I am thankful for that. Hope you all have a great holiday with family and/or friends, or by yourself if that's your thing.
